From prototype to certification: a practical guide to TRL 5–9

What each technology-readiness level asks of a medical device startup, and how shared testing labs shorten the road to market.

Most hardware founders reach a working prototype long before they reach a certifiable product. The gap between the two is where the technology-readiness levels from TRL 5 to TRL 9 live: pre-clinical testing, product compliance, regulatory support, manufacturing process validation and, finally, establishment.

At TRL 5 and 6 the questions are about evidence. Does the device perform as claimed, and does it stay safe under real conditions? Electrical safety, EMI/EMC pre-compliance and biocompatibility tests answer these early, while design changes are still cheap.

From TRL 7 onwards, the work shifts to documentation and process. A regulatory dossier, a quality management system and a validated manufacturing process matter as much as the device itself.

Running these stages on one campus, with testing labs, regulatory guidance and manufacturing partners a short walk apart, removes the hand-offs that usually cost startups months.
